In the early 1920's,the secluded mountain town of Cooke City played host to her neighboring towns of Gardiner, Livingston, Jardine and friends from Yellowstone National Park.

It was a not-to-be-missed social affair. The guests were entertained with a Fish Fry, horseracing, bronco busting, boxing, horseshoe pitching and a big old dance to end the evening.

The poker and faro tables were buzzing with many late hour card games.

Everyone came on the one way road through Yellowstone National Park or by horseback from the Sunlight Basin. The Beartooth Highway was not in existence.

The Fish Fry was truly enjoyed by the members of the community as it was the last chance for "visiting" before the winter snows closed off the valley.

As many of the local gentleman were mining bachelors they did all of the fish frying. Today, a gentleman of the community is deemed a "Most Honorable Cook". He is selected by a committee of local ladies. The nomination is based on the gentleman's genteel qualities and his contributions to the community.
