Yellowstone National Park road closures

Open Year Round : Cooke City via Yellowstone National Park North Entrance at Gardiner, Mammoth directly to the Northeast Entrance into the Cooke City Area.

The Chief Joseph-Hwy 296 remains open all year around and is maintained daily.

During the winter: From the Junction of Hwy 296/212 the road is open for 4 miles towards Cooke City and is plowed to Pilot Creek Parking Lot. From Pilot Creek the road is over snow travel only (non-wheeled vehicles) to Cooke City for approx. 10 miles.  This portion of the road is plowed the first part of May. It is always best to check with the Cooke City area Chamber for road & travel information during the first two weeks of May for openings.   Inclement weather causes occasional closures even after initial openings.  Please call 406-838-2495 or check back here for up to date information.
