Public Meetings On Park Road Projects Scheduled
For Billings, Cody, Cooke City and Gardiner

The second set in a series of public meetings has been scheduled to give area residents information on road construction that will take place in Yellowstone National Park this summer.

The biggest project will be on a segment of the park’s Grand Loop Road between Madison and Norris through Gibbon Canyon. Visitors can expect up to 30-minute delays from the time the road opens to travel April 17 through the summer. This section of road will also be closed to travel between 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. every night from May 26 through August 16.

There will be no construction delays or night time closures during the Memorial Day and Independence Day holiday weekends.

Removal of an existing bridge and construction of a new span will require the road to be completely closed to all travel beginning August 17 until it reopens to snowmobile and snowcoach travel in December.

Park staff will provide details and answer questions about this and other road projects at a series of public meetings:

Billings: Monday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m.; and Tuesday, July 21 at 7:00 p.m. at Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks Region 5 offices at 2300 Lake Elmo Drive.

Cody: Wednesday, May 20 at 7:00 p.m.; and Thursday, July 23 at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers of City Hall, 1338 Rumsey Avenue.

Cooke City: Monday, May 11 at 7:00 p.m.; and Thursday, July 9 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fire Hall.

Gardiner: Monday, April 27 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gardiner School Multipurpose room; and Thursday, May 14 at 1:00 p.m.; Monday, June 22 at 1:00 p.m., Monday, July 20 at 7:00 p.m., Monday, August 24 at 7:00 p.m. and Monday, September 21 at 1:00 pm in the conference room of the Yellowstone Association headquarters on West Park Street near the Roosevelt Arch.

Similar meetings have already been announced in Bozeman and West Yellowstone. Additional meetings to be scheduled in other communities near the park and will be announced in the coming days.

Maps and additional details on park road construction projects will be available at all visitor centers and online at http://www.nps.gov/yell.
Updated Yellowstone National Park road information is always available 24hours a day by calling 307-344-2117.

Choices

Some people sit – some people

Try;

Some people laugh – some people

Cry;

Some people will – some people won’t;

Some people do – some people

Don’t.

Some people believe and develop

A plan;

Some people doubt – never think

That they can;

Some people face hurdles and give

It their best;

Some people back down when

Faced with a test.

Some people complain of their

Miserable lot;

Some people are thankful for all

That they’ve got;

And when it’s all over – when it

Comes to an end-

Some people lose out and some

People win.

We all have a choice – we all have a say;

We are spectators in life or we get

In and play;

Whichever we choose – how we

Handle life’s game;

The choice are ours – no one

else is to blame.

A 1st grade school teacher had twenty-six students in her class.  She presented each child in her classroom the 1st half of a well-known proverb and asked them to come up with the remainder of the proverb.  It's hard to believe these were actually done by first graders. Just for fun!

Recently, when I went to McDonald's I saw on the menu that you could have an order of 6, 9 or 12 Chicken McNuggets. I asked for a half dozen nuggets. 'We don't have half dozen nuggets,' said the teenager at the counter. 'You don't?' I replied. 'We only have six, nine, or twelve,' was the reply. 'So I can't order a half dozen nuggets, but I can order six?' 'That's right.' So I shook my head and ordered six McNuggets.

I was checking out at the local Wal-Mart with just a few items and the lady behind me put her things on the belt close to mine. I picked up one of those 'dividers' that they keep by the cash register and placed it between our things so they wouldn't get mixed. After the girl had scanned all of my items, she picked up the 'divider', looking it all over for the bar code so she could scan it. Not finding the bar code she said to me, 'Do you know how much this is?' I said to her 'I've changed my mind, I don't think I'll buy that today.' She said 'OK,' and I paid her for the things and left. She had no clue to what had just happened

More Fun!

I recently saw a distraught young lady weeping beside her car. 'Do you need some help?' I asked. She replied, 'I knew I should have replaced the battery to this remote door unlocked. Now I can't get into my car. Do you think they (pointing to a distant convenience store) would have a battery to fit this?' 'Hmmm, I dunno. Do you have an alarm, too?' I asked. 'No, just this remote thingy,' she answered, handing it and the car keys to me. As I took the key and manually unlocked the door, I replied d, 'Why don't you drive over there and check about the batteries. It's a long walk.'

Several years ago, we had an Intern who was none too swift. One day she was typing and turned to a secretary and said, 'I'm almost out of typing paper. What do I do?' 'Just use copier machine paper,' the secretary told her. With that, the intern took her last remaining blank piece of paper, put it on the photocopier and proceeded to make five 'blank' copies.

Police in Radnor, Pa. interrogated a suspect by placing a metal colander on his head and connecting it with wires to a photocopy machine. The message 'He's lying' was placed in the copier, and police pressed the copy button each time they thought the suspect wasn't telling the truth. Believing the 'lie detector' was working, the suspect confessed.

My neighbor works in the operations department in the central office of a large bank. Employees in the field call him when they have problems with their computers. One night he got a call from a woman in one of the branch banks who had this question: 'I've got smoke coming from the back of my terminal. Do you guys have a fire downtown?'

Just for Fun!

While on a road trip, an elderly couple stopped at a roadside
restaurant for lunch. After finishing their meal, they left the
restaurant, and resumed their trip. When leaving, the elderly woman
unknowingly left her glasses on the table, and she didn't miss them
until they had been driving about forty minutes. By then, to add to the aggravation, they had to travel quite a distance before they could find a place to turn around, in order to return to the restaurant to retrieve her glasses. All the way back, the elderly husband became the classic grouchy old man. He fussed and complained, and scolded his wife relentlessly during the entire return drive. The more he chided her, the more agitated he became. He just wouldn't let up one minute. To her relief, they finally arrived at the restaurant. As the woman got out of the car, and hurried inside to retrieve her glasses, the old geezer yelled to her, 'While you're in there, you might as well get my hat and the credit card.'

           Thanks Betty!

==============

A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn't find a space with a meter. Then he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: "I have circled the block 10 times. If I don't park here, I'll miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses."
When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer along with this note "I've circled this block for 10 years. If I don't give you a ticket I'll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation."

           Thanks Betty!

EVER WONDER ...

Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens
our skin?

Why don't you ever see the headline 'Psychic Wins Lottery'?

Why is 'abbreviated' such a long word?

Why is it that doctors call what they do 'practice'?

Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons?

Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?

Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?

Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food?

Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes?

Why don't sheep shrink when it rains?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

Recently I overheard a mother and daughter in their last moments together at the airport. They had announced the departure. Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the mother said, 'I love you and I wish you enough'. The daughter replied, 'Mom, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Mom'. They kissed and the daughter left. The mother walked over to the window where I was seated. Standing there I could see she wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to intrude on her privacy but she welcomed me in by asking, 'Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?'. Yes, I have,' I replied. 'Forgive me for asking, but why is this a forever good-bye?’ 'I am old and she lives so far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is - the next trip back will be for my funeral,' she said. 'When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, 'I wish you enough'. May I ask what that means?’ She began to smile. 'That's a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone'. She paused a moment and l looked up as if trying to remember it in detail and she smiled. Even more, 'When we said, 'I wish you enough’, we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them'. Then turning toward me, she shared the following as if she were reciting it from memory; I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear. I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more. I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.  I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger.  I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.  I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess  I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye. She then began to cry and walked away.  They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour toappreciate them, a day to love them but then an entire life to forget them.

       Thanks Mary

St. Patrick’s Day

The Shamrock, By the seventeenth century, the shamrock had become a symbol of emerging Irish nationalism. As the English began to seize Irish land and make laws against the use of the Irish language and the practice of Catholicism, many Irish began to wear the shamrock as a symbol of their pride in their heritage and their displeasure with English rule.

The Snake It has long been recounted that, during his mission in Ireland, St. Patrick once stood on a hilltop, and with only a wooden staff by his side, banished all the snakes from Ireland. In fact, the island nation was never home to any snakes. The "banishing of the snakes" was really a metaphor for the eradication of pagan ideology from Ireland and the triumph of Christianity. Within two hundred years of Patrick's arrival, Ireland was completely Christianized.

The Leprechaun, Belief in leprechauns probably stems from Celtic belief in fairies, tine men and women who could use their magical powers to serve good or evil. In Celtic folktales, leprechauns were cranky souls, responsible for mending the shoes of the other fairies. Leprechauns had nothing to do with St. Patrick or the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, a Catholic holy day. In 1959, Walt Disney released a film called Darby O’Gill & the Little People, which introduced America to a very different sort of leprechaun than the cantankerous little man of Irish folklore. This cheerful, friendly leprechaun is a purely American invention, but has quickly evolved in an easily recognizable symbol for both St. Patrick’s Day and Ireland in general.                                                         History.com

Happy  St. Patrick’s Day

ABOUT GROWING OLDER...

First ~ Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying

about your age and start bragging about it.

Second ~ The older we get, the fewer things seem worth

waiting in line for.

Third ~ Some people try to turn back their odometers.  Not me,

I want people to know 'why' I look this way.  I've

traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't

paved.

Fourth ~ When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back

to youth, think of Algebra.

Fifth ~ You know you are getting old when everything either

dries up or leaks.

Sixth ~ I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to

the top.

Seventh ~ One of the many things no one tells you about aging

is that it is such a nice change from being young.

Eighth ~ One must wait until evening to see how splendid the

day has been.

Ninth ~ Being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable.

Tenth ~ If you don't learn to laugh at trouble, you won't have

anything to laugh at when you are old

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT!

1. You spend the first two years of your children’s life      2. The main purpose of holding children's parties
Teaching them to walk and talk. Then you spend        Is to remind yourself that there are children
The next sixteen telling them to sit down and shut up. More awful than your own

                         Thanks Betty!

As only a child could describe.....

What is Butt Dust? What, you ask, is "Butt dust?" Read on and you'll discover the joy in it!

These have to be original and genuine. No adult is this creative!!

JACK (age 3) was watching his Mom breast-feeding his new baby sister. After a while he asked: "Mom why have you got two? Is one for hot and one for cold milk?"

MELANIE (age 5) asked her Granny how old she was. Granny replied she was so old she didn't remember any more. Melanie said, "If you don't remember you must look in the back of your panties. Mine say five to six."

BRITTANY (age 4) had an earache and wanted a pain killer.  She tried in vain to take the lid off the bottle. Seeing her frustration, her Mom explained it was a child-proof cap and she'd have to open it for her. Eyes wide with wonder, the little girl asked: "How does it know it's me?"

SUSAN (age 4) was drinking juice when she got the hiccups. "Please don't give me this juice again," she said, "It makes my teeth cough."

DJ (age 4 ) stepped onto the bathroom scale and asked:  "How much do I cost?"

MARC (age 4) was engrossed in a young couple that were hugging and kissing in a restaurant. Without taking his eyes off them, he asked his dad: "Why is he whispering in her mouth?"

JAMES (age 4) was listening to a Bible story. His dad read: "The man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city but his wife looked back and was turned to salt." Concerned, James asked: "What happened to the flea?"

TAMMY (age 4) was with her mother when they met an elderly, rather wrinkled woman her Mom knew.  Tammy looked at her for a while and then asked, "Why doesn't your skin fit your face?"

The Sermon I think this Mom will never forget.... this particular Sunday sermon.."Dear Lord," the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. "Without you, we are but dust..." He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four year old girl voice, "Mom, what is butt dust?

       Just for Fun!

Two elderly gentlemen from a retirement center were sitting on a bench under a tree when one turns to the other and says: 'Slim, I'm 83 years old now and I'm just full of aches and pains. I know you're about my age. How do you feel?'
Slim says, 'I feel just like a newborn baby.'
'Really!? Like a newborn baby!?'
'Yep. No hair, no teeth, and I think I just wet my pants.'

Couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things. During a check up, the doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember.
Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. 'Want anything while I'm in the kitchen?' he asks.
'Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?'
'Sure.'
'Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?' she asks.
'No, I can remember it.'
'Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too. Maybe you should write it down, so's not to forget it?'
He says, 'I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries..'
'I'd also like whipped cream. I'm certain you'll forget that, write it down?' she asks.
Irritated, he says, 'I don't need to write it down, I can remember it! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream - I got it, for goodness sake!'
Then he toddles into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes,
The old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of

bacon and eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment.
'Where's my toast ?'

DEQ to Control Public Access at McLaren Tailings Abandoned Mine Site

The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is implementing public access control measures at the McLaren Tailings Abandoned Mine Site near Cooke City. The DEQ has installed signs and three locking gates to limit public use of the site and protect public health and safety.

The DEQ purchased the site in April, 2008 to facilitate reclamation of approximately 300,000 tons of mine tailings and waste rock. The tailings and waste rock have been identified as a source of contamination to Soda Butte Creek, which joins the Lamar River in Yellowstone National Park. The DEQ is required under an Agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to install locking barricades and signs at existing entry points to the site.

Avalanche Awareness for Snowmobilers

Thanks to everyone who came out this year for our annual UYSC Cooke City New Years Shootout, Sled N Liver Tune, & Charity Auction. As many of you know we had to postpone the races due to really bad weather conditions. We weren't excited to do this but felt it was the only option to ensure peoples safety. There was almost zero visibility at times which wouldn't have been safe for people racing up a hill at wide open throttle.

Instead of the race many of us crowded into the cabin at Round Lake where we enjoyed hotdogs, a heater, and shelter from the blowing storm. We made the best of the situation during the day and lots of hungry mouths were fed. It was still a good time even though we weren't able to get the races off. Once we packed up and headed back to town, everything got turned up a notch and all went as planned.

We had a great turnout at the night-time auction. The party included the auction with many great donations, music and dance, as well as an apparently new tradition, the Idaho Slim arm wrestling extravaganza! We started the night off with the charity auction which went great. This was followed up by a good playlist and lots of interesting dancing. The night ended with most of the bar crowded around a small table cheering on different participants in a heated arm wrestling tournament. I am sure this will become a fixture at our annual event due to its wild popularity. Once again it seems as though every year it grows and improves. This year we managed to raise around $5082. The proceeds stay right here in Cooke City and are split three ways between Friends of Cooke City S&R, Cooke City EMS, and the UYSC. We want to thank everyone who makes this event possible in any way:

BikeMan Performance, James Radke, Jeff Holdorf, Jeff Fox, Summit HD Films, Doc Zoom & Mountain Mod Mania Films, Big Sky X Thunderstruck Films, Mo Flow Vents, Black Diamond Extreme, Idaho Slim, Jason & Nancy Flug, Big Moose Resort, Cooke City Motorsports, Cooke City Exxon, Bearclaw Bob & Super 8, Elkhorn Lodge, Antlers Lodge, Soda Butte Lodge, Alpine Motel, Miners Saloon, Asplund Construction.

Another big thanks goes out to Team Talk, JEM, John Schwichtenberg, and Mic Dinsmore.

Lastly I'd like to thank the entire Pierce family and friends, Dugger, Jeff Holdorf, Jason Flug, and our auctioneer Leo Gaertner from Buns and Beds, for their help with putting this on. There are quite a few people who donate a good amount of their own time and money to make this thing happen.

Thanks Again!

Robert Weinstein

President UYSC

Top Ten New Year Resolutions

New Year's is the only holiday that celebrates the passage of time. Perhaps that's why, as the final seconds of the year tick away, we become introspective. Inevitably, that introspection turns to thoughts of self-improvement and the annual ritual of making resolutions, which offer the first of many important tools for remaking ourselves.

The following list is the result of our extensive survey, which consisted of over 300,000 responses worldwide.

1. Lose Weight and Get in Better Physical Shape

2. Stick to a Budget

3. Debt Reduction

4. Enjoy More Quality Time with Family & Friends

5. Find My Soul Mate

6. Quit Smoking

Auld Lang Syne

The song, "Auld Lang Syne," is sung at the stroke of midnight in almost every English- speaking country in the world to bring in the New Year. In spite of the popularity of 'Auld Lang Syne', it has aptly been described as the song that nobody knows. Written by Robert Burns in 1741, it was first published in 1796 after Burns' death. "Auld Lang Syne" literally means "old long ago," or simply, "the good old days."

Auld Lang Syne by Robert Burns (First 2 verses)

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,        For auld lang syne, my dear,
and never brought to mind?          For auld lang syne,
Should auld acquaintance be forgot        We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
and days of auld lang syne?          For auld lang syne

PUBLIC NOTICE

The DEQ has initiated data collection to support engineering design for site reclamation, scheduled to be completed in January 2009. Construction is anticipated to begin in the summer of 2009 and be completed in 2012.

Christmas Craft Ideas –

GUMDROP TREES
You will need a 6-8" tall Styrofoam tree, a couple bags of red and green gumdrops, some u-shaped hair pins, toothpicks, and a miniature string of beads. Cut toothpicks in half. Insert a toothpick into the larger (bottom) side of the gumdrops. Starting at the bottom, stick the free end of the toothpick (with gumdrops already on) into the tree. Continue until the tree is covered. (Alternate method: glue gumdrops onto tree form.) Attach the beaded string in a "loose" fashion, fastening it to the styrofoam with the hair pins. Finally, hot glue a miniature star or angel to the top.

Wonderland House
Turn a simple shoe
box a wonderland !
Select a fresh shoe box, and cut a rectangle shape in the lid of the shoe box.
On inside of lid, tape a piece of white tissue paper (this allows light to filter through).
On side of shoe box cut another rectangle shape (this allows you to peer through box).
On inside of box, glue white or navy blue construction paper to the sides of the box.
Glue fiber fill to the bottom of box.
Streak glue on fiberfill and shake sparkles on it. This is the snow.
Cut out old Christmas cards and position pictures like a winter scene in the shoe box. Wrap the outside of the box with pretty Christmas paper.
Your Instant winterland viewmaster is ready!

The Christmas Gift

Born this night a world of sin,
The prince of Peace the Redeemer of Men.
This child of God that was sent from on High.
To be born of Mary to suffer and die!

Rejected by men from the day of His birth;
To suffer and die on Calvary's tree.
For the sins of the world to set me free.
From Bethlehem to Golgotha, he never complained
Laughed at! Spit on! Mocked in shame!

He was born of a women, but He knew no sin,
This babe in the Manger the Savior of Men!

Chamber board meeting – December 18th at 2:00 p.m. Meet at the Chamber office.

All current members of Cooke City Search & Rescue;  Park County has implemented a new policies and procedures manual that we will all be receiving shortly.  The Sheriff will be conducting a meeting at the Firehall to hand out a new manual to all SAR Members and will also go over any changes that affect us.  I do not have a date for that meeting as of yet, but will be pushing them to have it prior to Christmas.  In the meantime, one of the major changes is that all CCSAR Members must complete an "Active Member Information Update", which consists of an authorization for the County to do a background check on all Members, into criminal and driving records.  I have delivered some of these forms to Members and have gotten them back, but for anyone who has not gotten one that wishes to be a member of CCSAR, please call me and make arrangements to get the form, or just stop by.

New members will also be completing an application that also includes the authorization for a background check.  The "Active Member Update" and the "Application For Active Membership (for new members)" are slightly different forms, so please call me and I can get you the correct form. I can be reached at 838-2432 or just stop by the Antlers Lodge. Thank you , Kay Whittle CCSAR President.

Cooke City Search & Rescue will be sponsoring an Avalanche Awareness class to be held at the Firehall on December 16th & 17th, and all are welcome, CCSAR members and general public.  The classroom session will begin at 7 pm on December 16th and will end when all information and questions have been covered.  For the field session on the 17th, we will meet at 9 am and will go to a location to dig snow pits, have beacon practice and form teams to practice a rescue.  Jay Pape from the Avalanche Awareness Center will be teaching this year's class again and will have some new films to show this year, so I hope everyone will try to make it. Call me at 838-2432 if you have any questions. Thank you, Kay Whittle CCSAR President

Speaking of public toilets

Article taken from New York (AP)

What a relief! The free public restrooms operated by the Charmin toilet paper company in Times Square during the holidays are being rolled out for another year.

It’s the third straight year for the 20 deluxe stalls.

The plush potties feature flat screen televisions, attendants dressed in tuxedos and plenty of Charmin.

The loos are so luxurious that Charmin promises Times Square tourists will feel like kings sitting on their thrones before making their royal flushes.

The toilets are being inaugurated Monday with a ceremonial first flush by pop singer and Broadway star Joey Fatone.

The DEQ has initiated data collection to support engineering design for site reclamation, scheduled to be completed in January 2009. Construction is anticipated to begin in the summer of 2009 and be completed in 2012.

Ladies Luncheon – Wednesday, November 12 at 12:30 – Soda Butte

Highway construction is complete for the season.  Thanks to everyone for your patience with the delays, dust and noise.  With help from the weather and the folks in Silver Gate, Oftedal was able to get the majority of work done through Silver Gate during a time that minimized the impact to landowners, businesses, and visitors.  This work was scheduled for next year and would have been more difficult due to the high water table and busy tourist season.

The road surface for the winter is actually “recycled” asphalt.  It was the old asphalt that was hauled to the quarry, crushed and then hauled back onto the roadway.  This material will provide a hard surface for plowing and will generate less dust than a gravel surface.  Oftedal will be plowing the roadway with a motorgrader until December 1st.  The National Park Service will plow from December 1st through March 1st.  Oftedal will resume plowing on March 1st.  As is customary with the highway snow removal, the contractor and the NPS will only plow the highway and the turnouts.  Individuals and businesses that require access from the highway will be responsible for removing the snow that accumulates in their driveways or parking areas.

The schedule for next season will be; finish building the roadway and install pipe culverts between Wildlife Along the Rockies and Silver Gate, haul the remaining gravel out of the quarry and place it on top of the “recycled” asphalt, and move the dirt and build the roadway between Silver Gate and YNP.  Once that work is complete guardrail will be installed and the asphalt will be milled in Cooke City and YNP just prior to paving.  Paving will likely occur in August or September.  The contract must be completed by October 9, 2009.

Thank you for a safe, productive season.—Jason Hahn, WFLHD Beartooth Highway Project Engineer.
