The Colter Pass, Cooke City, Silver Gate area is surrounded with unspoiled hiking trails, pristine wilderness, and views that are spectacular. Whether you are looking to hike Montana's backcountry or take a simple day trip on a well established trail, our area is a hiker's paradise.

HIKE MONTANA

The Gallatin National Forest adjoins the Cooke City area and encompasses thousands of miles of hiking trails. We recommend purchasing a good map that shows roads, trails, trailheads, streams, lakes, and major peaks, as well as recreation facilities such as campgrounds, fishing access sites, and picnic areas.

Trail conditions may change suddenly and unexpectedly. Bear activity, rain or snowstorms, high water, and fires may temporarily close trails. At a minimum, carry water, a raincoat or poncho, a warm hat, insect repellent, sunscreen, bear spray, and a first aid kit. It is recommended that you hike with another person. No permit is required for day hiking.

The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness offers some of the world's finest hiking. Trails lead from town and there are several trailheads nearby. Waterfalls, high meadows and alpine lakes in the Beartooth Mountains offer spectacular scenery.

Stop in at the Visitor's Center for a list of trails.
