Open Year Round
Cooke City/Silver Gate via Yellowstone National Park North Entrance at Gardiner, Mammoth directly to the Northeast Entrance into the Cooke City/Silver Gate Area is open year-round for access to our area.
The Chief Joseph-Hwy 296
This highway remains open all year around and is maintained daily.
Hwy 212 East of Cooke City/Silver Gate
Hwy 212 is open east of Cooke City/Silver Gate. The Beartooth Pass is OPEN!
2020 and 2021 Road Construction
Yellowstone National Park Road from Tower to Canyon will be closed for 2 years.
During The Winter
From the Junction of Hwy 296/212 the road is open for 4 miles towards Cooke City and is plowed to Pilot Creek Parking Lot. From Pilot Creek the road is over snow travel only (non-wheeled vehicles) to Cooke City for approx. 10 miles. This portion of the road is plowed the first part of May. It is always best to check with the Colter Pass, Cooke City, Silver Gate Chamber for road & travel information during the first two weeks of May for openings. Inclement weather causes occasional closures even after initial openings. Please call 406-838-2495 or check back here for up to date information.
Fall 2020 Closings Dates
October 13: Beartooth Highway (US 212 to Red Lodge, Montana) at 8:00 a.m.
November 2: All roads close at 8 am except the road between the North Entrance (Gardiner) and the Northeast Entrance (Cooke City/Silver Gate.)
